Washington, 20 November (WashingtonTV)—US Senator Carl Levin on Thursday night introduced a resolution condemning Iran’s human rights record, and calling for the immediate release of those wrongfully imprisoned.
The resolution cites “torture and cruel and inhuman treatment”, a high incidence of executions, including of juveniles, violent repression of women, serious restrictions of freedom of peaceful assembly, and severe limitations on freedom of religion and belief.
“This resolution puts the Senate on record in condemnation of Iran’s deplorable violation of basic human rights,” Levin, a Michigan Democrat, said in a statement.
Levin also said that American citizens have been the targets of the Iranian government, including Robert Levinson, who has been missing in Iran since 2007.
“Passage of this resolution would add the US Senate’s loud and clear voice of condemnation to the many voices inside Iran, and out, calling for the restoration of basic human rights for the Iranian people,” Levin said.
On Friday, a United Nations committee approved a resolution deploring the human rights situation in Iran, in particular the government’s crackdown on political opponents, human rights defenders, journalists and students in the wake of the presidential election.
