Major powers hold talks on Iran nuclear program

12:15GMT—7:15AM/EST

Washington, 20 November (WashingtonTV)—Representatives from six major powers met in Brussels on Friday to discuss Iran’s nuclear program, including possible sanctions against Tehran for its refusal to accept a United Nations-brokered nuclear fuel deal.

The US State Department said on Thursday that the senior diplomats from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia would also discuss the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency on Iran’s nuclear program.

The closed-door meeting involved political directors of the six powers, and was part of their long-running goal of persuading Iran to curb its nuclear ambitions.

European Union spokesperson, Christina Gallach, said that no decisions would be made in Brussels, reports the Associated Press.

US President Barack Obama said yesterday that the six nations will develop a package of measures in the coming weeks, to show Iran the “consequences” of failing to accept the nuclear fuel deal.

On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki dismissed the threat of sanctions, saying such measures had proved ineffective in the past, reports AFP.

Iran rejects Western accusations that it is seeking nuclear arms, insisting that its atomic program is geared only towards peaceful purposes.
